'I am there for you' says new Children's Champion

Focused approach to role

The newly appointed Children's Champion says he won't be afraid to speak out if necessary and 'make the changes that are needed'.

It was announced today (29 June) by Chief Minister Howard Quayle that Ayre and Michael MHK Tim Baker would take on the role.

Mr Baker's predecessor Garff MHK Daphne Caine resigned from the job after its scope was altered by the Cabinet Office.

The remit is now focused solely on looked-after young people, young carers and children with complex needs in the Island.

Mrs Caine believes the changes rendered the position 'totally ineffectual' and meant many young people searching for support fell outside of these criteria.

Mr Baker says a more 'focused' approach will help bring about 'positive outcomes' for the young people he's tasked with representing.

The Ayre and Michael MHK adds the position to a growing list of responsibilities; he's also chairman of the planning committee, the meat plant, and a member of two departments.

Mr Baker's already held talks with the 'Voices in Participation Council', a forum for young people, who regularly meet to discuss their experiences in the care system.

He feels the biggest issue at present is representation, and the difficulties of connecting the voices of these young people to decision makers in government to make positive changes.

Local Democracy Reporter Ewan Gawne asked Mr Baker if he'd be as outspoken as his predecessor.
