Victim of Victoria Street assault still in coma
A Douglas man has been remanded at the Isle of Man Prison after admitting punching a man and leaving him in a critical condition in hospital.
Matthew James Woods, of Saddle Road, appeared at Douglas Courthouse today (4 April).
The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to one offence of assault causing grievous bodily harm from 25 March.
Woods was seen on CCTV punching the complainant once, at 2.39am on Victoria Street in Douglas, following an ‘altercation’ between the pair and Woods' female friend.
As the man fell to the floor he hit his head on the ground suffering multiple fractures to his skull as a result – the court heard his eye socket had been fractured from the punch.
The prosecutor told the court the man, who was flown to a hospital in the UK for treatment, remains in a coma and that he was not ‘responding to medication’ adding: “He remains unchanged.”
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes committed the case to the Court of General Gaol Delivery where Woods will be sentenced.
He’ll next appear in that court on 28 April.
There was no application for bail and he was remanded at the Isle of Man Prison until that date.
