Man spared jail sentence after bomb hoax

Probation and fine for man who threatened to set off device

A man who called police but threatened to set off a bomb when they arrived at his home has been spared a jail sentence.

Forty-nine-year-old Thomas Paul Groom of Fairfield Terrace admitted making a hoax bomb alert when he appeared at Douglas courthouse this week.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes this week heard he'd dialled 999 and threatened to take his own life, saying he'd take someone else with him when he died.

But when officers went to his home, he refused to answer the door.

The hearing was told Groom had been drunk at the time and remembered very little of the incident.

However, he'd shouted he had a bomb and would raze his home to the ground if police tried to force their way inside.

In fact, there was no bomb.

Groom was sentenced to 21 months probation, and fined £100 for breaching a conditional discharge.

He was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
