Man who abused 999 system told to address his 'demons'

30-year-old repeat offender handed probation order

A Port St Mary man who repeatedly abused the 999 system by making nuisance calls has been told he needs to address his ‘demons’.

Aidan Christopher Bainton, of Victoria Road, made numerous calls to the Emergency Services Joint Control Room between 7 and 10 December last year.

He claimed he was being abused, requested protection, made allegations about police corruption and even one police officer if it was unlawful to think about ‘terrorist activities’.

The 30-year-old later admitted making annoying or persistent use of the public communications network.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Bainton’s advocate acknowledged his previous convictions aggravated the situation but said sending him to prison would be ‘a massive backwards step’.

Imposing an 18-month probation order High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told him he’d prevented others from using the 999 system.

"You need to understand you can’t do that no matter how difficult your life is at the time,” she added.

Instructing him to pay prosecution costs of £125 she told Bainton. “You need to address whatever demons are at the back of your life.

"You can’t keep offending and causing public expense.”
