Manxman spends several hours at sea as harbour conditions 'exceed forecasts'

The overnight sailing was cancelled as a result

Passengers onboard the Manxman spent up to eight hours at sea yesterday (Monday 1 January) as the weather rapidly deteriorated around the Island last night.

The Steam Packet's flagship vessel was delayed leaving Heysham and by the time she reached Manx waters, conditions in Douglas Harbour 'exceeded forecasts'.

She was then forced to stay off the east coast of the Island until it was safe to dock.

Manx Radio has contacted the Steam Packet Company for comment.

NO NEWSPAPERS

As a result of the delays, the overnight sailing was cancelled, meaning no newspapers have made it to the Isle of Man today.

Wholesale newsagent G E White said: "We apologise once again but the situation with the vessel is beyond our control."

Meanwhile, the weather overnight has left areas of localised flooding on our Island's road network, as it is 'not draining as it should do', according to police.

OUTLOOK

Today, the Ronaldsway Met Office says it will be dry at first, but rain will develop around late morning.

This will become persistent and potentially rather heavy before clearing late in the afternoon or evening.

There'll be mainly moderate southwest winds, these freshening later, with the maximum temperatures 11 Celsius.

Tonight will then be mostly dry, and tomorrow (Wednesday 3 January) will be a bright day with sunny intervals, only isolated showers and fairly light winds.
