Gov't told to lead on living wage

Voluntary rate of £8.61 put forward

An MHK wants the government to set an early example by committing to pay its staff a living wage.

Tynwald yesterday (17 Oct) agreed to receive a report on proposals to introduce a non-mandatory rate of £8.61 an hour

The figure is calculated based on the cost of basic needs and a 'decent' standard of living for Island residents - and was received with enthusiasm by Tynwald members.

 

Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas will now establish an independent body to get the initiative off the ground.
