MLC accused of "misinformation" by former department

'Wholly inaccurate' claims refuted

The Department of Infrastructure has offered to set an MLC right in future – after dubbing one of his Facebook posts “misinformation”.

Juan Turner MLC claimed health and safety bureaucracy meant government contractors had to travel to the UK to learn how to cut grass properly.

But today, the department’s dismissed his allegation, saying tender documents for grass cutting don’t specify any training requirements – and Mr Turner’s claims are ‘wholly inaccurate’.

It says maintenance contractors have to be trained and competent but certainly don’t have to travel to the UK.

In his Facebook post yesterday, Mr Turner – who was sacked from the department in June – dubbed civil servants “office dwellers” and said “swathes of bureaucrats” were coming up with “utter nonsense”.

This morning, however, his former department replied on Facebook, saying those carrying out work use hazardous substances such as pesticides and weed killers, as well as equipment such as chainsaws and powered access platforms - and so need appropriate training.

And it concludes its response by saying it would be happy to assist Mr Turner with the facts to prevent any more misinformation being published in future.
