New transport strategy needs to consider the north, says resident

DOI's launched a public consultation on the topic

The needs of the north need to be considered in any future transport strategy for the Isle of Man, according to a Ramsey resident.

It's after the Department of Infrastructure released its long-awaited public consultation asking for people's views on the topic.

Juan McGuinness, who's also a Ramsey commissioner, told Manx Radio it’s currently difficult for people in the north of the Island to connect to the Island’s ports by public transport:

In December 2018 the DOI introduced connectVILLAGES for residents in Andreas, Bride, Maughold and Jurby among others.

The service lets people book a mini-bus, which has no fixed route, ahead of time.

Kerry Grandville-Smith owns The Old Guardhouse Cafe in Jurby and says the current bus service affects how she runs her business:

Another resident, also from Ramsey, says he'd like to see more attention given to those with disabilities.

Eric Corkish uses a mobility scooter, but says damaged kerbs can often cause a hindrance for people with disabilities:

Mr Corkish also called on the DOI to introduce a ‘disabled champion’ similar to ‘The Children's Champion’ post to look out for the needs of those with mobility issues.

Manx Radio has invited the Department of Infrastructure to respond.

The consultation document is available to view HERE and will close on Monday 16 September.
