A new exhibition is shedding fresh light on the internment of almost 4000 women and children in Port Erin during the second World War.
'Friend or Foe' opens at St Catherine's church in the village today (19 May).
It marks the internees' arrival in May 1940, an influx which almost doubled Port Erin's population overnight.
Formidable World War 1 nurse Joanna Cruikshank set-up and ran the camp, billeting the German nationals with local landladies.
Her single-minded approach has not always been kindly portrayed in the history books - but is re appraised in the exhibition, organised by Rushen Heritage Action Team.
