Possible problems ahead for pay settlements

A union head believes pay settlements could be harder to reach in the years ahead because of ill feeling over the latest deal.

After receiving a half a per cent hike backdated to last April, politicians and civil servants will receive a two per cent increase in the next financial year.

However, head of the Unite union, Eric Holmes, says he understands why that has provoked an angry reaction among public sector manual workers who last summer agreed to a 12-month pay freeze.
