Questions over freedom of Manx press

Sources aren't revealed says newspaper editor

The Editor of Isle of Man Newspapers is reiterating that freedom of the press is 'one of the basic tenets of a free country'.

It was reported in the Examiner police were 'called in' by Port St Mary Commissioners to investigate a news item, details of which had been leaked to the newspaper by an anonymous source.

The story related to extraordinary general meetings held at the town hall to discuss the local authority's clerk, and the board submitted a formal complaint to Police over a possible breach of the Local Government Act.

Richard Butt says under no circumstances does the organisation reveal its sources, and neither should it need to.
