RNLI says vessel maintenance is crucial

Converted trawler needed lifeboat, navy ships and helicopters after taking on water

A lifeboat callout overnight should serve as a warning about the importance of vessel maintenance.

The verdict of Peel RNLI, after its lifeboat, a fishing boat, three helicopters and two Royal Navy ships came to the aid of a converted trawler in the early hours of this morning.

It had begun taking on water while it was about 11 miles off the west coast of the Island.

Coxswain Paul Cain says this incident acts as a reminder people must take responsibility for the condition of their vessels before leaving port.

Malcolm Kelly is Peel lifeboat's press officer.

He says the trawler didn't seem to be in the best condition.
