Should LegCo candidates take a departmental role?

Seven election hopefuls give their views

Candidates for tomorrow's Legislative Council election were on the receiving end of a grilling from the public on Monday night.

Liberal Vannin hosted a Q&A session at the Manx Blind Welfare headquarters in Onchan, which was almost full to capacity.

Seven of the nine remaining hopefuls were in attendance - Bill Henderson, Haafizah Hoosen, Peter Greenhill, Kerry Sharpe, Rob Mercer, Zahed Miah and Danielle Bell - with Michelle Haywood and Carole Lillywhite unable to be there.

The candidates were questioned on a number of topics, from pensions schemes to healthcare structures.

A question which provided a range of answers was whether or not they would accept a departmental role - and the salary uplift that currently comes with it.

Here's an insight into their responses:

In the order they were seated, we heard there from Henderson, Hoosen, Greenhill, Miah, Bell, Mercer and Sharpe.

The four successful nominees will serve a five-year term ending in February 2025 - decided by the House of Keys at 2:30pm tomorrow.
