Teenager's petition calls for more funding for the Island's music service

River Kelly-Brown wants 'equal access to music' 

A 15-year-old has started a petition calling for more funding for the Isle of Man Music Service.

River Kelly-Brown believes there should be an increase to allow all the Island’s children equal access to music and the Manx Youth Orchestra.

Uploading her petition to the internet last week, it's has now been signed now by more than 300 people.

It reads: 'Studies have shown that making music, especially in groups, is very good for mental health and well-being. 

'They also show that learning an instrument helps with academic achievement, improving verbal memory, reading, pronunciation, motor skills, and so much more. Music groups like the Manx Youth Orchestra are a wonderful opportunity for young musicians, giving them a sense of community and friendship.

'However, in recent years, funding for the Manx Music Service has decreased, and the Manx Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Intermediate section of the Manx Youth Orchestra have closed. A recent survey has also revealed that access to different musical instruments varies significantly from school to school, with waiting lists for some continuing for over a year.'
