Road surfacing programme underway

Tar and chip and micro ashphalt work around Island

A programme of road surface improvements is around the Island gets underway today (Mon 9th)

"Tar and chip" as it's known improves the texture of the road surface, which helps with water dispersal from vehicle tyres during wet weather.

It also seals cracks in the existing road surface, prolonging the life of the highway by preventing water getting into the road foundations.

Roads being surface dressed this year are the  New Castletown Road from Ballakinnish to Speke Lodge, Ramsey Road from Laxey to Dhoon Farm,     Douglas Road, Ballasalla from the Whitestone to Ballabridson and     Archallagan Road from Slieau Whallian Park to Lhoobs Road.

The Department will also be undertaking a programme of micro asphalt surfacing on main arterial routes and estate roads around the Island which can help level ruts and road depressions.

The roads which are being treated with micro asphalt are:

Lezayre Road (Pinfold Cottage to Glen Auldyn)

Lezayre Road (Ginger Hall to Bernahara)

      Glen Helen

      Belmont Hill

Ballanard Road (Abbeylands to Castleward Green)

      Albert Road, Ramsey

      Baldrine Hill

      Glen Road, Laxey

      Pinehurst Road/Close

      Ballakermeen Drive

      Ashbourne Grove

      Bellevue Park, Peel

      Brookfield Avenue, Ramsey

      Ballkneale Estate, Port Erin

      Friary Park

There will be speed restriction signs at intervals along the roads being treated, and the DOI says speed limits must be adhered to.

Some roads may be closed during working hours to allow the surfacing work to be carried out and closures will be posted on the government roadwatch site.
