September target for Peel Harbour road bridge

Eighty-year-old structure past sell-by date

Work is expected to begin on replacing Peel Harbour's road bridge in September, if planning proposals are approved.

The new design will be made public next week, with Infrastructure bosses on hand to discuss the proposals at Peel's Town Hall on Thursday (17), from midday until 4pm.

Dating back to 1938, the existing wooden bridge is deemed to have reached the end of its usable life, and the new structure is expected to cost in excess of £400,000.

The scheme is expected to take sixteen weeks, with a temporary bridge slightly downstream as the work is carried out.

When completed, the new version will carry two lanes of traffic and a footpath, built with a concrete deck with steel beams.

There'll also be alterations to the approaches to the bridge on both sides, and the new structure will be able to carry 44 tonnes, as opposed to the 20 tonne limit in place now.
